Art Soup stands as one of Synergy’s most meaningful, community-centered events—but it began with a simple goal: create something impactful, affordable, and deeply personal.
The idea was inspired by a large-scale fundraiser in Dallas, Texas, called Empty Bowls, an event benefitting the North Texas Food Bank. That event brought together thousands of attendees, and the bowls were created by working artists, many of them well-known. While the production impressed guests, it also required significant resources to host and attend.
We wondered: what if we could reimagine that concept on a much smaller scale? What if we could create something just as meaningful, but at a price point that anyone in our community could attend?
From the very beginning, we built Art Soup around accessibility.
A Grassroots Beginning
The first Art Soup was truly a labor of love. In its first year, Corky and Megan, two staff members, led the event and handled every detail in-house. Corky managed all public relations, promotion, and donor solicitation. Meghan tracked finances and supported social media efforts.
Their goal was clear: minimize expenses so that as much funding as possible could directly support Synergy’s mission.
Our community responded with incredible generosity. Local partners donated nearly everything—printing services, soup from 12 restaurants, wine from Cooper’s Hawk, bread from Panera, and desserts from Smallcakes. The team only paid for postage for the invitations.
We hosted the event at Synergy’s Youth Resiliency Center (YRC) to avoid venue costs, and staff members graciously served guests. And perhaps most importantly, the bowls themselves were created by YRC clients.
That first year, Art Soup netted $11,000; proof that meaningful impact doesn’t require an extravagant budget. It requires heart, creativity, and community.
Adding Deeper Connection
In the second year, Anne V., Synergy’s first special events coordinator, strengthened the event’s emotional connection. She invited Youth Resiliency Center clients to write a few sentences about what access to YRC resources meant to them.
The notes were raw and authentic, sometimes misspelled and often written in imperfect handwriting, but filled with sincerity and emotion. They reminded guests that Art Soup is more than an evening of good food and art. It is about real young people, real healing, and real transformation.
Those handwritten messages connected guests to the mission in a way statistics never could.
The Beauty of Handmade
The bowls remain one of the most beloved elements of Art Soup.
YRC clients create each one by hand. No two bowls look alike. You can see fingerprints, uneven edges, and the unmistakable marks of human touch. Their simplicity gives them undeniable charm.
They reflect exactly what Art Soup stands for: authenticity, resilience, creativity, and community.
What began as a reimagined fundraiser has grown into a cherished tradition. Today, Art Soup is a reminder that when the right ingredients come together–restaurants, donors, staff, clients, and supporters–something beautiful happens.
And sometimes, the most meaningful impact can be found in a simple bowl of soup.
We invite you to join us at this year’s Art Soup on Sunday, March 1, from 4–6pm at Synergy’s Youth Resiliency Center. Enjoy delicious soups from local restaurants, select a handcrafted bowl created by a YRC client, experience live performances, and hear inspiring stories of resilience.
Purchase tickets for $30 for adults, $15 for children ages 5–12, and free for children under 5. Every ticket directly supports Synergy’s work to provide safety, healing, and hope for youth and families in our community.
