It Takes All of Us: Protect Children This April and Every Day

April is here, bringing warmer days, signs of new life, and a season of hope. At the same time, for those of us working with children and families, April also carries a deeper meaning. It is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to come together, raise awareness, and take action to protect the most vulnerable in our community.

Each spring, we often see an increase in reports of child abuse. While that can be difficult to face, it also tells an important story: more people are paying attention, speaking up, and stepping in. Over time, campaigns like “See Something, Say Something” and ongoing education around mandated reporting have helped reduce the fear of getting involved. As a result, more than ever, people understand that early intervention can change the course of a child’s life.

Where Healing Begins

At the heart of this work, our Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC), we walk alongside children and families during some of their most difficult moments. However, we do not do this work alone, and we cannot.

The CAC exists to bring people together. We serve as a coordinated hub, connecting the professionals and systems responsible for protecting children, such as law enforcement, child protection, prosecutors, medical and mental health providers, and educators. Through this collaboration, we ensure that children are seen, heard, and supported in a way that reduces trauma and promotes healing.

And just as critical as these systems is our community.

When a Child Can’t Speak, We Must

Children often don’t have the words, the power, or the safety to tell their story.

They may be afraid. They may have been manipulated or threatened. They may believe what is happening to them is normal. Abuse often thrives in silence and in isolation.

That is why we must be the ones to notice, to ask, and to act.

When we choose to pay attention to changes in behavior, when a moment doesn’t feel right, or a child who seems withdrawn, we create opportunities for intervention. And intervention creates the possibility for safety and healing.

The Power of Showing Up

Preventing child abuse is not just a professional responsibility—it is a community commitment.

Preventing child abuse doesn’t stop at CAC’s and community agencies; it takes the commitment of our community.

Every time we choose to lean in, learn the signs, trust our instincts, and make a report, we are helping build a safer world for children. These moments matter more than we often realize. They can interrupt cycles of harm and create a path forward not just for one child, but for generations to come.

When a child is safe, supported, and believed, they are more likely to grow into a resilient adult. Someone who contributes, connects, and strengthens the community around them to support future generations of children.

Stronger Together

At the heart of this work is collaboration.

Our Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), which includes Children’s Division, law enforcement, juvenile offices, prosecutors, medical and mental health professionals, and school partners, works side by side to protect children and support families. They share information, problem-solve together, and remain committed to one common goal: the safety and well-being of every child.

This work is complex. It requires trust, communication, and a shared commitment to showing up day after day for children and families of every background, every story, every circumstance. Because abuse does not discriminate, and neither does our response.

Join Us in Taking Action

This Child Abuse Prevention Month, and every month, we ask you to be part of the solution.

  • Learn the signs of child abuse and neglect
  • Trust your instincts
  • Speak up when something doesn’t feel right
  • Support the organizations and professionals doing this critical work

One call. One conversation. One moment of courage. It can change everything.

To our partners, our MDT members, and every individual who chooses to show up for children, thank you. Your commitment creates safety. Your compassion creates healing. And your action creates hope.

Together, we can ensure every child has the chance to grow up safe, supported, and surrounded by a community that cares.
