University Academy Story
Kindness is Cool at University Academy
Schools in our community that partner with Synergy’s SBIS department, like University Academy Charter School, are taking a proactive approach to create cultures of kindness and equip students to establish healthy relationships and increase coping skills.
At Synergy we know that the skills young people form today help establish the foundation for their coping and regulation. Our SBIS prevention services teach empathy, respect, emotional regulation, and practical strategies for when things feel overwhelming — life skills that are the foundation for safe and healthy relationships and resilience.
The support from SBIS services are making a noticeable difference at University Academy. Students, teachers and administrators say the presence of a Synergy SBIS therapist or resiliency specialist in their building significantly impacts the way students interact with one another and the success students are having while at school.

In the words of one administrator:
“The lessons by our resiliency specialist are meaningful and engaging. They have promoted deeper discussions in the classroom on how to treat one another with kindness and compassion. Many teachers are incorporating aspects of the lessons into other areas of their academic day, as social and coping skills are beneficial for all students to practice. Students now refer to their “Empowerment Tools,” “Coping Tool Belt” and “Anchor Charts” to help them handle challenging situations.”
Students today are faced with more complex challenges than ever before. Giving them the tools they need to make good decisions and interact in a healthy way makes sense on every level. Thank you for helping us make this type of skill building attainable for students across our community.
