He is also the percussionist and keyboardist for Making Movies and a dancer, having been dancing traditional Mexican ballet folklorico for over 25 years. He started at a very young age performing in Ballet Folklorico Atotonilco, the dance troupe founded by his mother Maria Chaurand 40 years ago in Kansas City. At the age of 19 Juan-Carlos went to study folclor at the University of Guadalajara where he spent a year under the guidance of the late Co-Director Fernando Delgadillo. Dancing continues to play a big part in Juan-Carlos’ life and is also incorporated in the Making Movies performances and in university workshops he facilitates.

He started playing percussion at the age of 15 where he was taught by mentors and got live experiences with local Latin bands performing at festivals and clubs. His skills have garnered the attention of Los Lobos, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Los Texmaniacs, Bright Light Social Hour, Ozomatli and Los Lonely Boys, who invite him to tour and to record.”

Following her high school graduation, she became Assistant Coach to the her Alma-Mater team, leading them to the Brave New Voices in 2018 and all the way to semis in Houston, Texas.
