On Saturday, August 23rd, we gathered with donors, supporters, and community leaders to celebrate the grand opening of Forest Hill Village. The event was filled with joy, gratitude, and hope as we shared the spaces designed to change lives and dedicated the main building to our co-executive director, Robin Winner.
Guests heard heartfelt remarks from Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, Synergy Co-Executive Directors Robin Winner and Dennis Meier, Dr. Sara Brammer, Vice President of Domestic Violence Programs, Board Chair Jim Caniglia, and Past Board Chair and major donor Tom Isenberg. Following their inspiring words, the crowd came together for a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony before touring the spaces.
More Than Apartments—A Place to Heal
Forest Hill Village is not just about providing housing; it’s about creating a vibrant community. It was built with intentionality and care to create a true community for survivors of domestic violence and their families.
What was once a school has now been transformed into:
- Seven 2-bedroom apartments
- Five 3-bedroom apartments
- Six 4-bedroom apartments in a newly constructed building
- Family gathering spaces and offices for supportive services
Outside, the complex features fruit orchards, with plans underway for a playground and meditation garden for all residents to enjoy.
“These spaces were consciously designed to bring a sense of hope and healing to survivors and their families,” said Robin Winner, Co-Executive Director of Synergy Services. “They will help survivors as they learn independence during their healing journey, and prepare them to live healthy, successful lives when they exit our programming.”
A Path Toward Independence
The program model at Forest Hill Village is rooted in best practices for supporting survivors of domestic violence. Families who move in are carefully selected based on their needs and their readiness to work toward stability and independence.
Residents typically stay for about two years or until they feel ready to transition into independent living. During this time, they contribute up to 30% of their income toward rent and utilities. That money is set aside in a personal savings account, providing each family with a “nest egg” when they move out of Forest Hill and into their own apartments.
In addition to safe and stable housing, residents have access to:
- 24/7 on-site staff support
- Individual and group therapy
- Life skills and financial literacy classes
This holistic approach ensures that families not only have a place to live but also the tools and support to thrive long after their stay.
A Celebration of Community
The grand opening event was more than a ceremony. It was a celebration of what can be accomplished when our community comes together to care for survivors and families. The smiles, conversations, and shared sense of hope throughout the day reflected the true spirit of Forest Hill Village.
While the ribbon has already been cut, the story of Forest Hill Village is just beginning. Dozens of families will find safety, healing, and opportunity here, each taking steps toward a brighter, more independent future.
